We've been on the OpenEXR 2.0 beta for a while now, and we have a working implementation in the V-Ray stereo helper; however it's not available in any build yet.
I'm currently writing my bachelor thesis at Celluloid VFX about a deep compositing pipeline with Vray.
I'm planning to do performance tests, comparing different file formats, complexity of scenes and different compression methods. As i think, that the performance will be the main issue with deep files for the moment.
You said, that you had a working implementation of exr 2.0, when do you think could we expect a working build, to try out?
Also I wanted to ask you, if you are using any kind of compression yet and if you do which one is it? Do you plan to implement different compression methods? I think depending on the scenes and their complexity, this could make sense.
A lot has changed in the .vrst files recently in terms of performance; yes we do have compression; we also have a converter from .vrst to OpenEXR 2. Please email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com for more information.
vlado when do you think you could implement exr 2? i hope you did plan to do it? it officially out
April 9, 2013 - Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and Weta Digital announce the release of OpenEXR 2.0, the major version update of the open source high dynamic range file format first introduced by ILM and maintained and expanded by a number of key industry leaders including Weta Digital, Pixar Animation Studios, Autodesk and others.
Send an email to vray@chaosgroup.com and request details for the nightlies - the thing is that they could have other quirks in the builds hence why they're not put out as full releases. I'd be cautious of them for full production / render farm updates!
