  • problems going from rhino4/vray 1 to rhino5/vray 1.5

I bit the bullet and upgraded and I am having huge issues. I'm a noob when it comes to most of the vray settings. I've always used the same .visopts for my types of scenes and gotten friends to help me adjust. But my friends are no longer around and I am lost. On top of that, Vray doesn't seem to just 'work right out of the box' anymore.

Here is a quick rendering with no materials, sun or visopt in Rhino 4/Vray 1:

Here is the same model, default settings, etc from Rhino 5/Vray 1.5:

Obviously they are very different and I am unable to make the Rhino 5/1.5 renderings look any better.

I've tried several visopts from here and played around with settings to death and can't get anything. If it isn't rendering that terrible image, it's rendering nothing but a grey box. Also, the speed of the Rhino 4/1 rendering was about 30 times faster than the Rhino 5/1.5 one. That seems pretty backwards.

Anyways, I have a project due Monday and would GREATLY appreciate help to get me going. Thanks

If you need a quick solution - reinstall VfR 1.05 and use an old setup or from the forum tutorial section the starterkit. If you have a 64bit OS, than you can have parallel installed 1.05 for Rhino 4 and 1.5 64 for R5 64 (for testings without tight deadlines). VfR 1.05 is rocksolid, a matured product and 1.5 is a young, first release only. So, you should ask you - why you need the young 1.5 for your project, can't be done per 1.05 too?

I'm having terrible problems with the upgrade from 1.05 to 1.50 as well. Micha makes a good point I suppose but how am I to not conclude that I've purchased a lemon? It seems to me saying 1.5 is immature is an understatement. This is like a first or second round free beta. I'm quite surprised and disappointed to say the least. I kind of feel as though I've been ripped off.

Update: I'm gradually working through identifying and fixing the problems to the extent that I can. The settings for several of the materials got screwed up in translation over to VFR 1.50.

Noise is also more of a problem in 1.50. In 1.05 running an final quality output of 5120 x 3413, noise threshold .005 in the Image and DMC Samplers is sufficient clean whereas in 1.50 even .002 isn't quite as clean.

There was a bug if you open 1.05 scenes at 1.5, the texture filter was reset to 0 and this cause noise. Do you installed the latest update from december?

            I'm using version 1.50.22564.0.

Can you please direct me to where the texture filter is located and what value it should be set to?

            Thank you.

Micha, I found your post in the Tips section about this issue. The problem here is that I'm also getting a lot of noise in non-textured materials.
