  • Texture baking question

    Is there a way to bake the lighting from a highpoly model to a lowpoly model, i know max has this feature but i havent seen this option for maya.

    I think that the latest nightly builds have a "projection" baking mode that could maybe work (or at least, we worked on it - not sure if it got merged into the master branch) - I have to check.

    Best regards,

      This would be awesome since the workaround is a huge headache than involves basically doing a quick auto map on the high rez geo and then baking the texture from the highpoly to the low with Xnormal and for certain object this works but for objects with a lot of pieces gets more and more time consuming.

        So actually this is in the nightly builds (though we haven't tested it extensively). To do it:

        1. Select the low-poly object; go to Rendering > Lighting/Shading > Assign V-Ray bake options to selection.
        2. In the created V-Ray bake options, expand the "Projection Baking" section and make any adjustments as needed;
        3. To perform the baking, go to Rendering > Lighting/Shading > Bake with V-Ray... and click on the square to open the baking options window.
        4. Turn on "Projection baking";
        5. Click "bake".

        Let me know if you have any issues, like I said, we haven't tested this extensively.

        Best regards,
        Vlado

          Did anybody get this to work? I tried it with Build vray_adv_30501_maya2014_x64_24532 but was not successfull. Maybe you can set up a simple demo scene, Vlado?

          Thanks,
          Jan

            Seems to work fine here following Vlado's instructions and using latest Nightly Build from today.
            I am attaching a sample scene with 2 spheres - high and low poly. The high-poly sphere has applied VrayEdgeTex.
            Select the low-poly object and run Bake with Vray command - you will notice that the VrayEdgeTex from the high-poly object will be backed when Projection Baking is enabled.

              Thank you, Svetlozar. Your scene works fine with our nightly build as well. However I can't get projection baking to work with 2 simple planes (scene attached). Any ideas what might be the issue?

                The baking actually works but it gets the color from the bottom(unshaded) part of the high-res geometry, that's why the result is completely black.
                Make sure that Double Sided option from Option rollout of the material applied to high-res geometry is turned off and you will get expected result.
