  • vray memory setting help

    Hey guys,

i had recently some problems with maya & vray.
My scene crashed very often and i would like to know one specific setting
    to fix that problem.

    static & dynamic memory setting.

    memory value.

    I got a dual six core cpu ( 12 cores / 24 with Hyperthreading )
    and 48 gig of ram.

what value should i set for my memory value?
I have read an article where the author told to set a value for each
core. So what is true now? Do i have to divide my 48 gig of ram by 12 / 24 ?
or can i just set it to 45000 MB.

I'm a bit confused right now.

btw, when a crash happens, where can i check the log exactly?

    best regards

It depends on the scenes. Unfortunately dynamic memory accounting is not very accurate, so most of the times more memory is used than the limit.
Also keep in mind that this limit doesn't take into account static geometry. So if you have lots of static geometry you'll probably need to lower
    the limit.
For sure you don't have to divide the limit to the number of cores, as far as I know.

It depends on the OS, have you checked your %TEMP% directory?

Have you tried to contact our support at vraymaya @ chaosgroup . com ?

Thanks for the answer so far, but still i'm a bit lost.

So it depends if my obects are standing still or moving?
So what happens when the camera is moving and ( in my case ) everything is static ( architectural viz )
It would be nice if you can give me some detailed information in order to set the right value.
My workstation got 49 Gig Ram, i just can't believe that vray is crashing because of low memory...

      regards

No, dynamic objects are stuff like: hair, particles, vray proxies, tiled textures, instanced geometry (over some number of triangles they are turned into dynamic geometry), etc.

Also there is an option that forces the geometry to be static or dynamic (Render settings -> Settings -> System -> Default Geometry).
I'd leave it to "Auto" the default.

The movement of the camera doesn't affect the usage of memory by itself. But if on some frame you view some dense part of the scene that has many proxies then it might affect it.

I'd start by setting the memory to 20gig and then inspect the log for V-Ray warnings about low memory usage.
Also, I'll monitor the memory usage in the Task Manager during the rendering.

Keep in mind that V-Ray will crash only if there is no more memory to allocate and the swap space is exhausted.
