  • Confused on best way to render cross platform with distributed rendering

I have read a few posts on setting up DR cross platform. Is there not a way to map the drive paths between the OSX and Windows machines so that the paths can cooperate? For example, we keep everything on a NAS device. The Windows machine sees the path as "P:\" and the OSX see it as "/Volumes/project/". Can you set up an environment variable or something to convert those paths at render time? I normally kick off the renders on the Windows PC.

    Thanks,
    Byron

You can check this: http://help.chaosgroup.com/vray/help...ars.htm#assets but it won't work if you have a complex tree structure in the mapped drive.

You can also use the automatic assets transfer functionality in the nightly builds.

How do I get to the Nightly Builds? I don't see them in the downloads section.

t.petrov, If possible, I would like to find a way to avoid setting the ASSETS_PATH every time. We always keep the textures in the project /sourceimages folder. So I would need to change that variable every time I open a different project.

Hm, it depends how do you start your servers.

But the easiest solution will be to use a night build with transfer assets support.

I installed the nightly build 22501 on my two Windows PC's. I left the OSX one on whatever I had installed from the main downloads earlier. Do all the builds need to be exactly the same? Now when I try to run distributed render, non of the machines will connect. Warning: Could not use any of the selected (3) hosts for distributed rendering! I'm not sure what I did wrong on the reinstall that it won't connect to the one box that was helping with DR.

Yes, if you're mixing builds or releases you might get random problems - from wrong renders to crashes.
