        bterstal,

I'm sorry you are having these issues, I've tested and retested your methods on a couple of different versions of V-Ray now and cant reproduce the issue. Have you tried un-installing an re-installing V-Ray for Sketchup, as well as testing this issue while having all of your 3rd party plugins disabled? Though rare, sometime plugins can have a negative effect on V-Ray.

If this doesn't work we can set up a remote connection to your computer and try and work out the problem. Pleas email us at vraysketchup@chaosgroup.com or send me a private message with your name and information and I can set you up personally.
        Best,
        Ted Vitale
