Is there any benefit to try to minimize the amount of fur I have off screen? My grass plane is larger than I need but I don't want to take the time to cull it if there isn't any benefits to render speed.

It depends, if you are using GI, reflections etc V-Ray may still generate fur that is outside the view. Then it may make sense to try and cull it.

I can't figure out how to remove fur from certain polygons. Deleting the polygon didn't have an effect.Comment

Would it be possible to send us a sample scene and inform us which version of Vray and Maya you are using.
I've just run a simple test with a plane and a fur, and when the face is removed VrayFur automatically updates.
