  • HDRI Sky enlarged/blurry problem

    Hi All,

I am rather new to both sketch up (version & V-ray. I have modelled an exterior of a house which is currently under construction with all the materials through sketch up and looks good (in a cartoon way). I need to make it look more realistic which I know is possible with the v-ray settings ect. However when I add in a HDRI environment HDR image, it is far to big in comparison to my model. My model is at the correct scale as I have checked a number of times.

I have tried several different HDRI images however all of them are too large and the clouds/sun just look stupidly oversized. I have been stuck on this for two days looking through the settings & trailing youtube for tutorials with no luck.

Have any of you got some advise that is hopefully a quick fix? Also a good set up for exterior renders? .... I have also tried doing this on a new file with just a box, same thing happens??

    Many Thanks
    Alice

the problem is that hdr most likely is a spherical panorama. which means that it must be huge if uou want to use part of itbas your background if i understand correctly. your best option is to either place a photo in the background which is highres enough in size and match the lighting to that photo using vrays lights, like dome light for sky and sun light for sun as example.
or to find hdr which is so highres im talking 8-16 k pixels that you can take small portion of it and use as background while useing the spherical hdr as light source.

let me know if you need more help.

      Hi,

Yeah your theory sounds about right to what is happening. However I don't really wish to just place a photo in and match the light source as it is defeating the point of the HDRI light source to create a realistic image. Likewise I have tried to do your second option but I am struggling to find one which will give the desired effect while only using a small portion of the actual image.

I have added in a screenshot of it currently & the original HDRI image - You can see the sun in the photo is far to big.

          What version of vray?

If you're using 2.0, are you using a domelight or the environment (the latter being an outmoded method).

Pop up a link to the hdri file you're using perhaps.
