  • 3DS Max and 3DS Max Design Render Node

Is it possible to install both 3DS Max and 3DS Max Design on a render node and still use v-ray for both?

Currently it only appears that v-ray is recognized by one of the packages.

    Thanks
    Dave

Why would you want to if it's just a render node?

Our current render farm is using 3DS Max 2015 and when we submit a job from 3DS Max 2015 workstation everything works fine.

When we submit a job from 3DS Max 2015 DESIGN the job won't start. We thought this indicated that we required both versions installed on the render node, but when we tried that V-Ray produces an error when the job starts.

So basically we're trying to submit job from 2015 and 2015 Design to the same render farm. Is this not supported?

        Hi,

but when we tried that V-Ray produces an error when the job starts.
What is the exact V-Ray error that you get ?

Please note that this workflow requires V-Ray to be installed on both applications : 3ds Max and 3ds Max design 2015.
In order to have V-Ray on both of them, please do as follows.

Run V-Ray installer , choose installation type, click on "Customize" button and make sure that all paths are set correctly to 3ds Max 2015 root

        folder.
        Continue with the installation.
After that run V-Ray installer again, click on "Customize" button un-check the Check-box "Uninstall prevoious installations"
        Change the default paths to:

        C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max Design 2015
        C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max Design 2015\plugins
        C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\3dsmax Design 2015 for x64
        C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\RT for 3ds Max Design 2015 for x64

        and continue with the installation.
Note that the second installation will not be registered and if you need to uninstall it , you will need to manually remove the files.

          That should work fine
But if you're talking BackBurner, then you need to add a variable to the Windows environment

In Windows Right click on "computer" and go properties

Go to Advanced System Properties > Adanced > Environment Variables
          Add this line:
MIX_MAX_DESIGN_BB and make the value 1

Do this on all computers, then you can mix BackBurner jobs between max and max design
          Kind Regards,
          Morne
