  • Black buckets in renderings

Renders show black boxes randomly (empty buckets).
I've read many many posts (not only specific to Vray for Rhino) regarding the black squares appearing in the renderings and most of them seem to be related to Distributed rendering when slave machines can't find textures, etc. This is not my case as I use a single machine. Also I doubt that is a RAM problem, I increased the RAM allocated to Rhino to the max and Vray's "Dynamic memory limit" to 14400 (I have 16gb of ram).
After many hours of trying different settings, it seems to be a problem related to the GI primary rays method chosen:
It doesn't happen if I set the primary rays to brute force (with default of 8 subdivs and 3 bounces). With the other methods (irradiance map, Photon map or none the black squares appear. My preferred method would be irradiance map.
The secondary rays are set to light cache.
BTW disabling GI altogether solves the problem, so it's definitely GI related. (but crappy and shadowy lighting as a result, of course)
The rendering is relatively small 800x600 and not a particularely large scene.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you

    Hi John
Is there any chance that you could send us the scene? I would like to loot at it. fernando.rentas@usa.chaosgroup.com

        Fernando,
I discovered that the problem is caused by the ambient occlusion. It renders fine with ANY primary or secondary method withouy AO. Turning on AO is creates the empty buckets always ....
        Any ideas ?

I'm sorry, I don't know anymore ... actually I rendered with AO again and it seems that the the only option where it renders fine with AO is with Brute force as primary but he result in terms of speed and quality is not as desirable as with Irradiance map.

              Hi
I have no idea why you have an extra sun in your scene that it is not the Rhino document sun or a sun made with the V-Ray sun icon. I'm guessing that this scene is kind of an old scene and for some reason get corrupted. I just copy the geometry to a new rhino instance and setup your setting to this new scene. Everything seem to be rendering fine in my side. Here is the scene. Please, try it and let me know if you still have the blck bucket issue.

                Hi Fernando,
Sorry but now I'm really confused.
1.- Copying the geometry to a fresh blank screen didn't help. Still getting black buckets when AO in on https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...sh%20scene.jpg
2.- First of all, if I open the scene I sent to you originally, if I click on the M in Environment/Textsky I don't see an extra sun: Only Sun1 and Rhino Sun Light (see attached) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...xtsky-suns.jpg
3.- But if I open the one you sent me, the environment textures are not Textsky but TextAColorOP ... (see attached) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...xtsky-suns.jpg
4.- Also the ocean bump map is gone despite the material being the same. Did you change units ? (see attached) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...der-result.jpg

Did you use the Visopt settings I sent you?

                    Hi John
What version of V-Ray are you using?
