  • Purchase Process - New Customer

    Hello,

I've been using another renderer for quite some time now, and was thinking of jumping ship to V-Ray, it seems though that there is no I pay money with credit card, download the software and enter my license. There is a physical dongle I need to have everytime I use V-Ray. Is this actually the case, or am I missing something?

Yep - the guys are going to trial web based licensing soon but for the minute the easiest way to allow people to use their license on multiple computers was a dongle that they could carry between home / work / other stations.

Oh I see. Thanks for your quick answer. Does an option exist for a person that has one workstation and just wants to use the software on one machine?

If not is it possible to create a disk image of the USB key and use it just on one computer instead of having to stick the usb disk in for every usage?

      Thanks again,

      Nick

The usb key license is that option really, if you had a software based license tied to your machine and something in the machine died you can at least move the usb key to another machine and get back up quickly. I'm not sure on the disk image of the usb thing, that'd open up a lot of opportunities to duplicate licenses so I'd imagine not. It's a license server running on a host computer that checks the license each time a render is started or the render dialog is opened currently. Online licensing may help you in that regard and it'll be useful for people who want to rent temporary licenses too.

I quite like the idea of having the dongle personally for things like upgrades or going on location elsewhere.

Yeah it's a pretty strange idea to me, I was so surprised when I heard of it. I'm running software that are worth thousands of more dollars like maya, and all the photo, music and video post production tools, and none of them in 2015 have a physical device that needs them to operate... it's kind of strange. but i do get it, i guess i'll just stick to RenderMan for now (cause i live in an area of the world where deliveries aren't very trustworthy), but I'll keep a look-out for hopefully future licenses (again that hopefully don't force us to be online to render).

Thanks for your quick answers and help
