  • V-Ray Demo: Trouble Rendering nHair

I'm trying out the V-Ray 3.1 for Maya demo and having a bit of trouble. I have a preconstructed scene that has nHair, but the nHair won't render. I've tried both with and without applying a VRay Hair shader (as well as having those attributes enabled as well as disabled.) I've tried numerous other things to no avail.

The scant tutorials I can find on these matters indicate that I should just be able to render it as is. I didn't see any indications that this is a limitation of the demo.

I have also tried creating a new scene using nHair, even just a small amount. I tried it using the same model as well as a separate attempt with just a plane and a sphere. The only thing I've managed to get working is a crude sample scene I found somewhere online. It is a sphere with nHair applied. It rendered in VRay with and without a VRay hair shader. However, if I create another sphere in the same scene and apply nHair to it, that new nHair will not render.

nHair seems to render fine with the demo build. Most probably is something in the scene, could you please send us the scene to support@chaosgroup.com
Also what OS are you using?

I managed to figure it out. I was running up against the 200 objects limit of the demo. When there was enough nHair to push the simple sphere over that limit, rather than only render part of the nHair or something, nHair would be entirely ignored. Hiding them also does not apparently stop them from counting against this limit. I was able to successfully render the scene with a tiny fraction of the number of follicles the scene had. Although, it's not really useful for comparison purposes this way...
