Hmm, I only see a mention that the quality needs to be set in the source, but what exactly needs to be set? Ive tried light subdivs, material subdivs, render settings. But no improvement in the material preview, so must be something else I need to set.

Still slow as anything also. (by the way this is with mesh lights or area lights, I didnt feel much difference, also no dome light)

      I stand corrected.

In the past, what would have had to be changed to increase the quality?
It's very possible it's a user error still

the render settings in the max file to merge in.
Of course, now those may be overridden by the currently open max scene settings in the render panel, who knows...
I haven't really tried it, i have to admit.

Ok, that doesn't work as far as I can see. Preview must be getting it's render settings from somewhere though.

They are hard-coded. The only thing you can turn on and off is AA (from the ME options dialog).

Just FYI, a better material preview is in the works and hopefully will make it for the next SP.

              Best regards,
              Vlado

Just for info: in the past versions, just increasing light samples reduced noise in the glossy refl. With vray 3.3+ it's impossible cause the MatEditor preset surely has "use local subdivs option" disabled!
Anyway this isn't usefull anymore... Just wait for next SP

just to reanimate this old thread... im swapping a job from corona to vray and i am REALLY appreciating the much better material preview in corona. Seems this was due to be improved back in 2016 (coming in the next service pack?) now its 2019 and i think we have had a few service packs since then...?

Well it's coming together with the new material library.
