  • Help needed with realistic ocean (water) material

    Hi All

I am slowly working on creating an ocean scene. I have a problem making realistic rippled water. I have tried the ocean Vismat materials and the sample ball shows ripples but when applied to the ocean plane (infinite plane) it just shows as flat and extremely transparent. Can anyone help shed some light on what i am doing wrong or even share a Rhino file using an infinite plane and water material that works?

    Thanks
    Kit

    Hello, Kit,

What version of V-Ray for Rhino are you using?
In v3.40 there are several presets in the material library which simulate water surface (https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...rials+Category).
Alternatively, you can use the Water texture as a bump map. (https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/VRAYRHINO/Water)

Make sure you adjust the textures based on the scale of your project.

Should you require further assistance, please provide a sample scene or screenshot.

    Kind regards,
    Peter

        Hi Peter,
I have same issue. can you give me key points to adjust to come up with larger wave? i tried the preset material and it works well in small scale however if i put large object it goes just flat.

Hello, Jocoriah, and apologies for the late response!
Scale depends on your scene. Experiment with Rhino's texture mapping controls (Size and/or UVW repeat) and V-Ray's material Bump/Displacement amount value. Try increasing them proportionately and then fine-tune them to your liking.

          Kind regards,
          Peter
