  • When will the OpenCL GPU render be supported for V-Ray - Sketchup

    Hi!

I wanted to write in the wishlist, but can't. And this isn't a wishlist item. It's hugely important.

When do you plan to release a version that supports OpenCL, basically any AMD GPU card? Or are you too invested into nvidia?

Seeing as the new Apple computers are coming with AMD GPUs only and seeing that for a PC AMD cards have a ton of more compute power for the same price as nvidia this is an important feature that is missing.

So, when is the timeline? I hope you are professional enough to have some idea if it will be 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, a year????
The "We don't know" possible answer should would only speak of your competency level simply putting it because you have basically disabled a feature with the new version.

I wrote this in the wishlist forum. Still as far as I know they are waiting for Apple to update something... So no luck. I received my new iMac a couple of weeks ago and can't wait to try it out with V-Ray. I tried it with Blender and it's such a huge step! Some example scenes render faster with GPU now! I hope Chaosgroup can give us an answer when they are going to support it. They can't ignore it anymore.

    Best,
AMD Ryzen 9, RTX 2080Super, ArchiCAD 24, Vectorworks 2020, Sketchup 2021 Pro, Vray Next for Sketchup, Skatter, Twinmotion 2020

Well. Unfortunately (for us because of them). OpenCL is an open standard. It's been here for a long time. "Latest" iteration is OpenCL 2.0 which is supported by a lot of cards in the last 2 years. (RX4xx, RX5xx, RX Vega) So, no, they don't need to "wait for Apple". That's is pure bullshit.

Hopefully slowly moving to Unreal will mean not having to do with out-of-date and slow updates. It's not just the complacency of v-ray. Almost all of archiviz software is living out-of-date. I will happily tried a tiny bit of realism for the possibility of client to "walk through their space". With support for things like Vulkan and whatnot.

Should stipulate: this is a request for apple computers, right?

OpenCL is on windows for sketchup and 3ds max vray variants.

as for the unreal stuff (or any of the stuff you mentioned)...well, long story short, you may want to consider running a windows environment. I think its unfair to blame industry or even chaos group for delayed adoption periods when apple is such a closed garden.

I didn't mention it was just because of Apple. Personally I'm running Windows. And the OpenCL rendering is not working there either in V-Ray 3.x for Sketchup.

ok, well, hmmmm, see THAT's actually an issue. However, it should just be to your computer, as I have opencl working on several of my machines (I think? I assume? not sure if there is a way to double check, just assuming because its on non-nvidia hardware)

can you list system specs? what version vray you are on? and most importantly, how you know openCL is NOT working? what led you to that conclusion? what happens?

specificity is the soul of narrative

RX480, RX580, one system is Intel 2600K, another is Ryzen 1800x, one laptop and all of them Win10, but it doesn't matter because:

                I can't ediit a post?

                Anyway,
I can't start GPU Accelerated rendering.

Make sure you are using the latest available video drivers for your video graphics card. Look up the driver downloads on the website of your graphics card vendor. GPU OpenCL render mode is currently not supported. GPU CUDA is available only for Fermi-, Kepler-, Maxwell- and Pascal- based NVIDIA cards.

If you experience other problems with Interactive rendering and GPU Acceleration, please contact Chaos Group Support.

Ah I didn't know it wasn't working on Windows as well, my bet. In that case Chaosgroup should probably be the one to let OpenCL work I guess. Maybe they do have some contract with NVidia or something. For now it's bad that I can't use GPU rendering. I'm also looking into Unreal and getting some good results already. Rendering of a movie for instance is a piece of cake and doesn't take much more time than the length of the movie itself. Also the interactive part (VR walkthrough etc) is great. If V-Ray for Unreal gets launched (mac please as well), we could have the best from both worlds.

I'm afraid there's no update so far. If the situation changes, rest assured, it will be announced.

                      Kind regards,

Seeing all your "collab" posts with nVidia on social networks. Are we to assume that this will probably never happen

Still nothing I presume. And not even a peep about any plans or?

I'm not interested in GPU but it's very sad they are effectively cut out the chance to work with AMD cards. At least I hope that OpenCL will still works for things like denoiser that I use a lot.
Promoting a single closed(and pricier) platform is a huge mistake, we all know what happens when there's no competition in hardware, the improvements slow down and the price rise.
They should provide OpenCL option even if it's not the fastest solution, and honestly I don't think drivers can be an actual problem because there are quite a few renderer that can use OpenCL so either they don't want to develop this or they are incompetent(and I'm sure they are not).
