  • Render subdivision not matching smooth mesh preview

    Hello,

I often have this case, I would like to render a simple mesh keeping the look of the Maya smooth mesh preview in Vray but I can't.
For example in the image below (no extrusion here) I would like to be able to keep the same look as in the viewport (2) but Vray smooth the corners. Is that something possible?
I've tried the Vray extra attributes such as Osd Preserve Geometry border and classic catmull clark but that doesn't work.
I know I can add edge loops for this but it would be really useful to have an option to match this without editing the mesh.

    Thank you

    Hello again,

I found that if I change the vertex boundary in the smooth mesh attributes -> opensubdiv control to sharp edges only, the result match in the viewport and V-Ray.
So it seems that the option I'm looking for in V-Ray would be a way to have the vertex boundary set to sharp edges and corners.
Is that something that could be implemented ?

    Thanks

      Hello,

No we don't have such an option for the moment, but I'll log a request for this so it can be potentially implemented for a future versions.
Thanks for the info, it's very detailed and helpful.

You can use crease tool in maya and opensubdiv in vray, it will preseve the creased edges (not ideal but at least some sort of option

Thanks for the help Dmitry, I tried the crease tool but it seems it doesn't crease the corners edges as well.

By the way, it seems that when viewport subdivsion is checked in render settings/overrides, the opensubdiv attributes on a mesh with smooth mesh preview are ignored.
It could be useful to have an override global settings checkbox in the opensubdiv attributes, like for subdivision and displacement quality.

When "viewport subdivision" is enabled, the mesh basically receives the same subdivision as with vray subdivision. There's a plan to consider changing that in the future.
