In general it's better to use newer versions of V-Ray since there are constant improvements..
I managed to cut about 20% from the build process of the ocean and will keep looking at speeding it up a few more hours before checking what to do with the horizon. Bad thing about the ocean construction is that (for this scene particularly, but these are close proportions to any other) about 15% go into building the ocean, 35% go into subdividing the surface into more polys, and the final 40% are the transfer of the mesh data to 3ds Max itself, which on top of that happens on just one core or Max might crash...
