  • Use Existing TX Textures for rendering

    Hello,

this is copied directly from arnold render documentation:

    Use Existing TX Textures:

Allows you to use texture formats like .exr or .jpg in Maya, but .tx textures for rendering. When 'Use Existing .tx Textures' is enabled

I wonder if similar feature will be implemented in Vray ? or if there any other method to do this ? we tried using pre/post render mel script to change the texture during render but it's not really the best solution.

    thank you.

There was a request for this but we haven't implemented it so far. I'm not exactly clear how such a workflow is useful. V-Ray is just as fast with regular textures as it is with .tx files and having two copies of the same data has always seemed to me an unneeded complication. Can you explain how such a workflow is valuable?

    Best regards,

its using Tiled textures (tx, tiled exr, etc) for render is what I was trying to say, which can be a huge different in render time.

      thank you

Have you measured the differences? Like I said, normally V-Ray works just as fast with regular file formats.

I did couple of tests to see the difference in render time. The picture shows 19 sec (normal) vs 5 sec (tx) to render using bunch of 4k textures.

Did couple more tests or larger scene, and looks like the speed difference is not as much as I thought it's going to be.

I'm not sure what Vray do differently than Arnold, but coming from Arnold I remember that the difference is quite big.

But we still need to convert to tiled textures because they are more memory efficient to render.

          Thank you.
