Hey jsyang , effects like those are usually created either in a Post processing package such as Nuke or, alternatively, you can use a noise on a curve (spline) and apply a material to it with self-illumination enabled. If you're rendering with V-Ray, make sure to enable GI as well - otherwise the rest of the objects in your scene won't receive any lighting from the self-illuminated object.
Regarding the scattered purple light in the clouds in the second picture - you can absolutely do that with the Phoenix FD / V-Ray volume grid rendering options. However, creating the lightning itself is not something that fluid simulators are intended for.
Simply put, witth those examples you could use volumetrics to create the 'glow' around bright objects. In the real world this is caused by the particles in the air scattering the incoming light.
For the lightsaber edge, the body of the lightning or the beams of light in the plasma ball, it's best to use 'traditional' modeling techniques. I would definitely check Youtube out - plenty of tutorials showing different Lightning setups.
