  • Changing the use of the placeholder texture in SketchUp when using a V-Ray material that contains another material as a base

    Hello,

Is it possible to stop the SketchUp viewport displaying the placeholder uv texture (sorry if that's the wrong terminology, not sure how else to describe it!) when applying a V-Ray material that contains another V-Ray material as a base? I.e. the Toon material or the Blend material, both of which display in SketchUp as seen in the image below.

I'm pretty sure I saw in some videos I watched that other people have them displaying with SketchUp showing the base texture instead, how would I do that?

    Thanks for your time.

Pretty sure i figured this out the other day when playing with VRSCAN materials as they also have the vray logo as a placeholder. Again sorry if the terminology is off.

I think if you use the "Sample Paint" tool(I call it the eyedropper) to select the one of the faces covered by this material, in the default tray there's an "Entity Info" Info tab witha a "Face" subsection, if you click on the left hand box is the front face the second box is the back face. It then brings up a "Choose Paint" Box, click edit and change the texture in there.

It changes how it looks in sketchup but does not affect how it renders in Vray.

EDIT: Just noticed that it may change the bump map in V-Ray mats, but defiantly works for VRSCANs

Double Edit: It seems that if its using the Vray Texture helper.png you can change the image to somthing more suitable without affecting the render.

    Hope that helps

Brilliant! Thanks for sharing your tips!

You are quite right and simply changing the texture file in the SketchUp material editor seems to have no impact on the final render at all! This works perfectly for me so many thanks!

I had noticed the front and back faces working differently in the render before as well, if you assign the default SketchUp material to the front and a different to the back, when it comes to rendering the back face material gets rendered.

Guess there is still an awful lot for me to figure out!

      Cheers again.

We have also had that occur when the reverse face is pointing outwards towards the camera (Usualy on 2D faces using PNGs for transparencies, clothing, chain link fences etc))

Try changing the face style to Monochrome (View->Face Style -> Monochrome) you can see the reverse faces are marked as dark blue. Its just a matter of selecting the face, right clicking and clicking reverse face. I think there is also an option to Orient faces which will make all connected faces orient the same way as the one you have selected (make sure you have a front face selected).

Im also reasonably new to Sketchup/Vray, been working for this company that uses it as IT support for about a year now but ive taking a liking to the programs and i think i have a pretty good understanding of how things work. Its nice to be able to share that information to help other people
