    Hi there everyone,

    I am a new Vray user and I am trying to get my head around the program. I have seen quite a few video tutorials and read a couple of articles and I am quite satisfied with how this program is working for us. At the moment, I am working on interior scene of a flat renovation project and I am having difficulties understanding why this background image is casting shadows on the model when I have deselected the 'cast shadow' button on the entity info box. In working space it looks fine but when I render the scene the shadows appear anyway. Any ideas on how I could solve this or another way to follow? Thank you in advance, Afroditi

    Hi again everyone, so any advice would do... I tried also to insert the picture as watermark as well but this is not the way I want to control this... I would just prefer if it was a seperate element inside the working space that wouldn't cast shadows when I'm rendering... Hopefully someone can help me out with this. Many thanks

      Hello,

      The SketchUp Entity info's shadow toggles do not affect V-Ray. To achieve the result you are looking for, please do the following:
      1. Create an Override Material and set as Base the Material with the Panoramic photo
      2. Create a new Generic material and set its Opacity value to 0.
      3. Add the Generic material in the Override material's Shadow slot and then apply the Override material to the cylinder.

      I would also suggest using a Dome Light with a good-quality HDRI instead.
      Alternatively, you can use the current photo you've taken and apply to a Bitmap texture in the Environment Background texture slot. In this case you need to make sure the Texture Placement is set to Environment Screen. Furthermore, the image file's aspect ratio (Width/Height) would need to match the Render Output aspect ratio to prevent the background from being distorted (as it will always be stretched to fill in your rendered image size.

        Hi Peter,

        Thank you very much for your input! The override material works great although it makes it more difficult to adjust the picture after I apply it on the cylinder. I can only see the background when I am rendering and not inside the working space anymore (a vray sign takes the place of the image) other than than, I have been experimenting with the dome light and I am quite pleased with the result for the moment as an amateur renderer. Here is the updated version of the scene. Again many thanks!

          The V-Ray placeholder texture applied on the corresponding SketchUp material is only there to make texture mapping easier. You can change the texture file through the SketchUp material editor and this will affect only the SketchUp viewport and not the V-Ray render output.
