  • Ocean Displacement issue

    Hello,

i have an issue with the ocean rendering in one of my scenes, where it doesnt render anything beyond some distance outside the sim container. The displacement setting for the ocean also only works in pure ocean mode, but that again renders only inside the container. In addition the ocean subdivs dont seem to have any effect.

Strangely it works perfectly fine in every other scene with the exact same settings. I have already tried to transplant the scene into an new one by adding all the assets as vray proxies and deleted all the sim caches, but that yielded the same result.

I am using the trial version of Phoenix 3.1, but the same issue occurs with 3.05. I should also have enough RAM with 32GB and around 25 used for rendering with all assets and texures enabled. I attached the scene without any texures or assets, as that would result in a 5GB archive.

    Lighthouse.zip

I would really appreciate any suggestions and help with this, thanks in advance

    Hey,

This sounds like you are running out of RAM anyway. You can make sure by opening the Phoenix log file from Simulation -> Preferences and check for [ERROR] tags. If the ocean mesher runs out of memory, it construct only what it can fit in RAM and does not display a message because it might stop your sequence render. The solution will be to lower your Ocean Subdivs from the Rendering rollout.

    Cheers!

Hi, thank you for your response.

I have rendered with the default 2 subdivs and with 0,1 subdivs and i could not find any error in the log file, at this point i really think that 3ds Max broke my scene again as it works perfectly fine in every other scene. In addition even when i delete all geometry and textures the ocean still doesnt render outside of the container regardless of subdivs, while only using around 4 gigs of RAM.

Here are the log files: FullScene.txt OceanOnly.txt

Ah yes! Something else is going on - the border of the mesh where the infinite ocean is supposed to attach to the simulator does not build for some reason. I will ping you when I find out more...

Hey, this will be fixed in tomorrow's nightly. The bug happened when Get resolution from MAX was off and the resolutions of the VFB and the Max image size were different.

Thanks very much for reporting this! Cheers!
