  • Assigning Material/Object -ID to .vrscene(proxy)

My office is currently reaping and exploring the goods of what V-ray 3.6 just brought to the table. *Standing ovation*
Under that topic, we've recently tried to export models from 3ds Max to Rhino.
Specifically as .vrscene, since this removed a lot of the material mess from previous versions.

    Summary: it works great!
Although, we're currently not able (they're just black) to assign a "selection color" within the VFB to the .vrscenes (tree models).

Are we missing some smart solution?

Or can we get a specific VFB layer for .vrscenes added in the nearest future?

    Cheers!

Hello, and thank you for your feedback!
Currently only the RenderID and ObjectID channels work with imported vrscenes.
The dev team is exploring ways to enhance the vrscene proxy functionality in terms of interaction with parts of it (e.g. materials) . This is all I can share for now.

Let me know if you have any other thoughts on V-Ray Proxy workflow and capabilities!

    Kind regards,
    Peter

Then something we're doing must be wrong..
We're currently not able to get a color(they're all black) within neither "RenderID", nor "objectID" for the .vrscenes we've imported..
What would be the correct approach?.. (I'd like to give it a try, first thing on monday.)

      Well,
We would also like the option to select multiple vrscenes/proxies and be able to adjust the "preview type" of them simultaneously..
(And yes, we do realize that this, potentially, can be heavy for the software/computer.. but it would make our workflow smoother.)

We do have some extra wishes for V-ray in general.. but weirdly we're not able to open a thread on other channels than in "Public"..
(We'd like to know how we can fix this as well.. something we've overlooked or misunderstood?)

      Sincerely,
      Brage

RenderID should work out of the box.
ObjectID works if prior to being exported as .vrscene, the model objects have been assigned ID numbers. This actually applies to MaterialID as well.

I've passed your suggestion about multiple proxy preview setup to our dev team. Thank you for you feedback!

          Perfect!
I will send them an email, first thing tomorrow morning!
(And yes, that is correct. This profile is a private one, just to post comments when i'm at home.)

I'll have a look at the exporting again tomorrow as well..
But I would appreciate a small walkthrough/tutorial as to how that should be done correctly.
From what we tried.. that didn't work last time.

Anyways, I'll post another comment tomorrow, after I've tried again.
(adding pictures and stuff, if nothing else works.)

          Sincerely,
          Brage

So, I'm(Brag0n) back with a quick update.
We've done a few renders now.
RenderID(picture in turqoise&grey) seems to work, which partly solves the issue, for now.
We are, however, not able to get objectID(the picture in black&white) to work on the .vrscenes
(we've already tried to force randomization of object ID's, without luck..)
            Anything we're missing?

Since time is sparse at the moment, we will have to wait with trying to re-export the scenes with materialID.
(But as mentioned above, we would appreciate a tutorial/guide on correct procedure to make this work.)

            Sincerely,
            N+P

The object ID numbers must be assigned in the host app prior to the .vrscene export. In 3ds max this is done through the Object Properties panel.
Material IDs are actually not translated from 3ds max (apologies for the confusion!). Was wrong to judge it based on quick tests with exports from Maya.

To get filtered render channel results, you can use a workaround involving the ExtraTex render element with Multi-Sub texture by adding a bunch of of colors to the texture slots and get IDs "Random by render ID" (or also experiment with "Face material ID" or any of the other modes to see if any of them might be of use to you.

              Kind regards,
              Peter
