  • Vray - Ram Limit

Vray(v 1.46.112) seems to crash max once it reaches the hardware memory limit on ram, meaning it wont even page information to the hard drive, as soon as it hits my 1.9gig page, it crashes. It does this wile calculating detailed photon maps and light cache.

Kind hard to make a nice render when i cant even fully calculate out the GI

Actually its a limit of windows and the current 32bit hardware.

Then wouldnt windows itself bottom out? It didnt even hit the max allowence of memory, it just hit the limit of the onboard memory, it should still be able to write information to the drives for a good 500mb's at least before crashing out.

It is a limit per proccess so if you had two max's and vrays running the first one could use it's share of the memory and the second would swap. You can use the 3GB switch in XP to gain another Gig of headroom.

Now that he has been slapped and deservedly too( I might add)

WinXP64 can use lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of memory!

Im still waiting for am AMD dual core before I go get Win 64.

I wonder if the dualcores will do better than those IBM cell processors.

Also, i just realised I was calculating light cache per .02 of an inch... yeah... that was dumb.

The 3gb switch is a life saver...

We have it running on 5 of 6 machines. Last night I tried to setup the 6th machine and the result was non too pleasing. Error Message: Cannot Find WindowsSystem32hal.dll. It's happened to us before on other machines. Has anyone run into the "...Missing Hal.dll..."after changing the Boot.ini file to include the 3gb switch? We had to break out the good old xp disk this morning to do a fixboot from the recovery console. I have found this resource on the web http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm . Before jumping back on the machine to edit the boot.ini file is there any words of advice besides "Do not do it!"?

                        Thanks.

Being down one machine could hurt...it's useless box for this project unless the 3gb switch works. A useless dual 3.0 xeon box...that hurts.

If that desn't work Microsoft does have some patches, they solved all our issues. Just have to go the support route too get them.
