  • Poor Z Buffer Quality

I'm using the built-in Z depth info in the RLA file format to add DOF and fog in After Effects 6.5 using the 3D Channel Effects. The quality of the z depth channel is poor (aliased) and the resulting image is also aliased where the effect occurs.

Anyone know how to blur the z depth channel in AE to prevent this?

    thanks,

    Rick

Use a V-Ray ZDepth render element with the "filter" option on, if you want a smooth ZDepth channel. I am not sure you can get this result with a .rla file.

      Hi!

The quality of the 3D Channel Depth of Field filter in AE is extremely poor. This got nothing to do with the way VRay calculates the depth buffer. I can only suggest that you either upgrade you AE to version 7 and use the built in Lens Blur filter or purchase a third party depth of field filter like Frischlufts Lenscare. http://www.frischluft.com/lenscare/lenscare.php

I only use non antialiased Z-Buf, but 2 or 3 time original resolution...

And I'm using Lenscare... Not bad at all...
