  • doing a shadow study- semi urgent

Just something that came to mind during a shadow study,

I currently want to show shadows cast from a proposed building onto the adjacent building. Due to the proposed building's orientation the shadows only hit the adjacent building later in the day, approx between 5 & 8pm (on June 21), arent I correct in saying that the shadows are going to be softer at that time of the day compared to say 12pm.
My concern is that the shadows landing on building should be softer than they appear (default Vray Sun linkled to Sun/compass) i.e. should I animate the softness and density of the shadows, what are your thoughts on this please?
    Info/advice would be appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Tom

I think you can raise/lower the GI primary bounce.

      Hi Tom,

If you want softer shadows increase the size multiplier of the VRaysun.

I'm wondering if shadows are softer with less bright lights...
At the end of the day, the shadows will be longer, and therefor (being further away from the casting object) they'll be softer...but at the same distance you probably get almost the same softness...
Now I write this...there might be a reason for slightly softer shadows, because of the sun looking bigger (due to atmospheric distortions) and the end of the day...

I'd better take a good look this evening

Shadows might become also softer due to more scattering in the evening (same for morning) as the light travels a longer distance through the atmosphere. Tho i am not sure if that will really affect shadow softness. I guess the impact on shadow density would be a lot bigger.

            Regards,
            Thorsten
