Thats interesting, had wondered previously whether AO could impact on tree flickering

I had the same problem and after dozens of tests and comparisons I figured out the noise was mainly produced by poor Anti-aliasing settings and/or small LS sample size. When I'm rendering exterior walk-through animations I stick with adaptive DMC 3/7 Clr. Tresh. 0,003 using IRR tweaked med preset and LC set on screen with a pre-filter 64 (for a 720p sequence). The overall sampling quality is controlled by the DMC sampler. It works for almost every situation with similar render times between 15-30 min (dual Xeon e5520). Flicker occurs only if you have extremely small details. Autograss produces this kind of detalis and I'm not sure if you're be able to clean that out unless you render at 4k!
