  • Irradiance Map and Photon Map - independent variables

    I'm bouncing back and forth through lighting tutorials, trying to soak all the info as fast as possible........

    With respect to both IR Maps and Photon Maps, which variables are independent to the calculation process? Example, in Vlado's Photon Map tut the Search Distance could be tweaked after the calculation to remedy splotches. Could someone make a list of these variables?

    This would keep me from second guessing myself all the time..........

    After calculating the irradiance map, using the saved file, you can twick:

    - The interpolations values (stored with AA).

    After calculating the photon map, using the saved file, you can twick:

    - Retrace bounces (Used during the irradiance map process);
    - Retrace threshold (Used during the irradiance map process);

    - Max Photons (Used during the irradiance map process or with AA);
    - Search Dist (Used during the irradiance map process or with AA).

    Hope this is what you mean...

      So my process should be..........

      1. Set Bounces, Interp. Samples, Max Density, then save the Photon Map.
      2. Tweak Max Photons, Retrace Threshold, Retrace Bounces.
      3. Tweak IR Map 1st bounce multiplier and 2nd bounce multiplier.
      4. Save IR Map if change 1st bounce to IR Map.
      5. Tweak AA.

      When should I tweak the individual light settings (Diffuse Subdivs)? Would that go in #1 or #2?

        When is computed vraylight subdivs (quality shadows,not photons)?
        Can I re-used my photon map and IM and increase subdivs for vraylights?
