Im sure you've seen this...
Manifold Exploration: A Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique for rendering scenes with difficult specular transport, to appear in ACM Transactions on Graphics (Proceedings of SIGGRAPH 2012)
http://www.cs.cornell.edu/projects/manifolds-sg12/
I just read through it this am. I know we've talked about the downside of MLT and after reading a few more papers I can see why you are not a fan of it but this seems like the first time im seeing substantial improvements on some of the more difficult transport paths. It might be worth a read. I know you were looking into ways to reduce the noise in the current PPT this might help as well as be able to capture some of the specular issues.
All the best.

P.S. yep im still playing a lot with the PPT, hard to imagine that one day it wont be the routine way we render...
