  • pixar subd displacement open source

I just watched a presentation from siggraph at the autodesk booth. It had a rep from pixar discussing how they were making their subd displacement methodology open source. Can we expect this tech to wind up in vray at some point? They made it sound like it would get into max at some point maybe as an alternative to turbosmooth. It was cool to see the displacement happening in the viewport ( a maya viewport in this case)

It may be possible; we still have to clear up the patents issue - just because something is open source, it doesn't mean it's not protected by patents.

There is nothing new here; like I said we are looking into it, but it will be a while before you see anything in V-Ray, if only because it will take a while to integrate this properly - it's not as simple as just dumping the code in V-Ray and expecting it to work. As an example, it took us several months to get Alembic working properly and much much longer to integrate OSL.

        Best regards,
