everytime i open it, max crashes.

May be this scene was saved in win2k with SP4

Try to open & resave it in WinXP, it must work. Or install SP4 for win2k but don't forget to install update No824146 for win2k. This update correct some bugs and your max-files will be saved correctly

I use max 5.1 and w2k sp3 and other people can open the file perfectly
Try to download the natty´s scene from http://www.rendertime.co.uk/vray/ies/07.zip
and this is the parameters to use photon map
