    It works

i tried something way out of norm...i have this model which has 3.2 million faces and tried rendering with the settings nat came out with....and the result is a shocking improvement...used to take 6 hours plus...now just 2 plus....way to go nat.

          hi all

the settings are great! BUT with glossy reflections the samples of 150 are too much for test renderings...! I've tested this right know.

any ideas to reduce rendertime, but keep the quality?

          best regards

i only use these setting purelly for test render through out the day ... just to get the lighting right ... not for production renders

I have a quicker way to test the light only...!

                GI: min/max -3/-2
                clr: 0.4
                nrm: 0.5
                HSph: 16
                Interp: 16

advaned irr map: interp samples 10, no check sample visibility

                qmc: default

rendertimes for the speedtest.max: natty's way: 57 sec., my way 41 sec.
the result is bad, but you have to look with "snake eyes", like clint eastwood.

Natty - these settings are great!!!

Curious: if these are test render settings, what are your ballpark settings for a production render? and how dow they affect speed / quality. (sorry if you've discussed this already).

Natty, I have tested that on several other scene, seems like your Hspher div and i sample is too damn high, it's 200 ~ 150 is actually making it SLOWER than default without any optimisation (50)
I use themaxxer's setting and put the slider wayyy down to 16, and QMC to 1.0 for all, and rendering time just cut down much lower and yet maintain really good rendering.

From what I can see.... my rendering for a particular scene is 17 minutes. it's as slow as my best rendering setting with area shadow (Max's own) turn on! I am not saying your setting is bad, just maybe not working for this particular test render...

                                yeah sure Richard
but if you lower the the samples from say 200 to 80... then will get a lot faster

at the end of the day its what works for you
