Star Wars Lego face animations

Hi folks.
Does anyone know the technique of animating what looks like a 2d facial animation onto a 3d character, as in the great Lego films out at the moment?

I don't know but it can be easy to animate a poly (the mouth for example), and, at render time, the poly generate a texture (or projection).

It must be "use image sequence" in the file node. You could animate the face in toomboom or Photoshop and output the entire sequence that way..

I think they write a plugin to convert curves and project them on to 3d geometry as face. I cant imagine they sill using image sequences to do it.
