  • camera match technique

It is literally 3rd day since i am trying to match camera angle to attached image.. No success at all! I wanted to add some external sitting along with shop interiors.. I tried hard but either i am able to match exterior or interior.. but not both at a time! i used everything from perspective match tool to old cam point technique but nothing working.. Image doesnt look distorted.. just wondering where i am going wrong.. Any tips? Click image for larger version

I can't spend any time on this but here's a quick match from syntheyes - you'll have to load the image as your camera background and you'll have to parent everything to a point at [0,0,0] made from the top view so your rotation in world space is also [0,0,0] and then use that to scale the scene to a proper size.

Run the ms file from maxscript > run script in a blank 3dsmax file.

Yep - so you look through the camera and load your jpg as your viewport background, you'll see the boxes align to your building and you can use it as positional references for your scene. As I said I don't know the scale of the building so I can't set it's size properly, so you'll have to attach the camera and box to a point so you can scale the lot in one go and use that to fit it to the size of your scene.

If you load the jpg in the background of the scene the script makes hopefully it'll become clear. Here's a video explaining the process which shows a bit of max from about 20 minutes in which is relevant - https://vimeo.com/126516983

I cant open your max file and without any reference scale it cant be matched the way i was going to do it.
I know it's a real photo, I wanted a link to the site in google maps.

I cant do it without more info, but maybe you should straighten up the photo and increase the size of it on the bottom until the horizon line runs through the center.
The easiest way to camera match is to eliminate as many variables as possible - straight verticals so you don't need to roll the camera, a centered horizon and you don't need to rotate up or down. Camera raw gives you the lens width (or at least a range) and If you can use google maps and some basic maths you can figure out the position the camera is supposed to be in within a few feet. measure how high you hold a camera, use that as a ballpark and you're 95% of the way there.
half an hour moving some variations around within those ranges you just figured out with some geometry in the scene to line up perspective lines and it should be as close to perfect as you can get.
You also need to find out what lens was used and fix the distortion because it's massively warped and cant be matched accurately as is.

                      Hey,
Thanks for looking into this. I got your point.. i have no much technical knowledge about camera matching so i was using photo as it is.., i will now try it with your tips. Below is the link of this site location- - https://www.google.co.in/maps/@50.94...7i13312!8i6656

i was provided only with ground floor plan of building.. there too i had no information about scale.. i extruded plan considering typical window height i.e 2.5m . I was asked to show interior of shops which are currently closed in picture & the outdoor sitting in front of those closed shops with bollards... I have worked on one similar job earlier.. see attached..

i was asked to insert similar details in this building aswell.. but i realized until i match camera properly.. it is just not possible to add details convincingly.. My deadline is passed & i had already cut a sorry figure.. i can still send you max file.. just in case you want to try it at your end.. Let me know & i will pm. Thanks one again for your time!
