I'm currently working on a underwater macro shot and I seem to have to generate 3 caustics maps. One for the focus, covering a very small potion of the scene with very small search distance and density. One for the background with a higher search distance covering the visible ground geometry. And one for the fog of the background with a even higher search distance and density because it needs to cover a wide field to get some caustics in the open water part of the background.
I don't know if this is common or just a very special case. But it made me wish for something to make it work with only one caustics map. Things I could think of would be: Screenspace parameters for serch distance and density (pixels). Some kind of a hotspot photon target for the sun with multiplier for denity, subdivs and Serch distance.
My scene is an extreme example because the caustics need to work in a very small area 3-4cm² but also in a big arera of 50-100m².
But I think it could be also usefull for exterior shots and station/airport like interiors. I've never seen such settings for caustics and that makes me think its probably impossible for some reason or woud have huge drawbacks. But i'm curious, so..
