Hey. How difficult would it be to make HDRI's emit Photons or have them convert to an irradiance map. What would be the obvious benefits or perhaps there wouldn't be any?

Why do you want to do that? I think you could apply it to a sphere as a material and project it out to a flipped normal sphere. Tell the inner sphere to not accept GI or shadows or visible to camera etc. and set the outer sphere to not generate GI. Save the Irrad map and there you go.

Trying to find a way to maintain HDRI quality while obtaining speculars without adding too many extra lights. Just an idea.

What I do is just use an HDRI with a higher multiplier instanced into the Reflection/Refraction override or into a specific materials Environment slot.
