  • Need help with converting settings in beta ver (1.46.09)

I have been using 1.09 for a little over a year. Long enough to get comfortable with most of the settings (although far from understanding them all!)

I've tried several of the initial beta versions and abandoned them quickly because of render times. This week I've been trying to understand the new version.

I started by creating a fairly generic scene in VIZ 2005 consisting of spheres, boxes and planes. I then created an assortment of material types to test the different versions of vray. I used glass and chrome for the spheres, a default vray material and flat plastic for the boxes, and a default vray material, water, asphalt and grass for the planes.

My thought was this would take into account reflections, refractions, instancing, displacement, bump maps, caustics, HDRI, etc.

I typically do exteriors, so I used a vrayshadow omni (turned off) for GI, plus one vrayshadow direct and one vraylight for caustics.

My best time on the scene in 1.09 with my standard settings was 31 minutes. (800x600 render, dual AMD2800, 2GB RAM)

    Best time in 1.46.09 is 1hr 36min !

I realize that settings are different in the new vray, and I have read all the posts here I could find on the subject. I've tried IR+LM, IR+QMC, QMC+LM... you name it. And I've tried all kinds of various settings posted here for IR, LM, QMC, AA, etc. These have affected the output and render times somewhat, but nowhere near the times I got in 1.09, and still well over an hour.

    Bottom line:
I like the overall look of renders in the new version. I like the added features. I really like the idea of DR. But times are outrageous. Does anyone have any tips I haven't tried? Or, would anyone else want to take a stab at the file to see how their render times compare with different settings? It's about a 500k file that I could post on FTP if anyone is interested.

    Thanks!!

(BTW, lots of great info here. Too much to digest!)

Sure, post it. There are many here that can't resist giving it a try. Also post your 1.09 image so there is a target.

      Download info

Ok, let's give this a shot.

I've posted the MAX file, necessary maps, a sample image from 1.09, and a sample from 1.46 (no changes to any settings).

      FTP info here: http://www.customcadsolutions.com/ftp.htm

You should be able to login anonymously and access the 'vray-test' folder in the 'public' folder.

Let me know if you have trouble.

I hadn't noticed that, but it looks like you are right. Although this wasn't intended, and I don't often even use refractive caustics in my exteriors, is was trying to give vray a bit of a workout in many different areas so I could get a benchmark between the two versions.
