  • light diffusion

In cinematography one can diffuse lights by shining them through cloth such as silk or muslin. This results in wrapping the light around the subject and softening the shadows. Is there a way to emulate this in CG? Would this be done simply by making the CG light larger?

Larges yes, and less directional. The original light likely has some focus or directionality in it and will get scattered more with the diffuser, as well as the diffuser being some distance in front of it somewhere which makes it effectively a larger light surface.

Right, so a rec light. Cool.

So here's a further thought: If I wanted to emulate a studio key light like a 2k Fresnel, I'm thinking that a Maya spot light would not me ideal since, like all Maya lights it does not have any size to it. So instead I could use a rec light set to a disc shape (maybe even take a HDR image of an actual 2k Fresnel light and map it to the light's texture input) and then make it directional. The only thing I'd be missing is barndoors, but that could be made with geometry near the light.

Just thinking out loud here. But I'm thinking this approach would yield something far more realistic than a spot light could.

Yeah that should work, especially with a texture so you have a circular gradient with darker and lighter bands, or a different light colour towards the edges.
