Hi,
a long time I missed the GI AO option of the CPU mode at the GPU mode. Often I need to render train interiors, where my client's like to see the small technical needed gaps at the wall and ceiling panels. Finally I found a little workaround: if I need small details visible than I create a material version where I add a black emissive layer on top. The transparency is controlled by a dirt texture. By adjusting the "Occluded color" the AO visibility can be adjusted. This AO layer can be easy added to any material.
This technic is also nice for metal objects like screws, bolts ... . So, no additional rendered AO pass and postwork is needed.
