  • LUTs once and for all

I can only apolgise for bringing this up, but Im so confused about using LUTS,
Everytime i try one it just makes the image look broken. Would anyone be able to clearly bullet point the exact process and settings?

Im using a 3dCollective filmic neutral LUT , which is linear.

LUT APPLIED : LUT SET TO 'WORK IN LINEAR' DISPLAY SET TO OCIO

LUT APPLIED : LUT SET TO 'WORK IN LINEAR' DISPLAY SET TO NONE

I mean surely they shouldnt be that bad, when the LUT is filmic neutral. I looked at the 3d collective tutorial and it wasnt anything like this, either really flat or blown out, and basically you cant do anything with it afterwards.

anyway any help would be really appreciated.

im guessing its to do with the filmic tonemapping thats auto applied in ACES workflow, so probably not taking that into account.

It could be used in multiple ways in the ACES workflow, with or without OCIO setup in the Frame Buffer
This is mostly about getting a good look, hence there are different ways of achieving this

I will make a video and post soon

Lookup table layer in VFB can not access hdr range, just clips at 1.0.
in VRay you need at least partial tonemapping (Reinhard, log, whatever to get everything into 0-1 range) before applying lut.
