bump maps question

hi guys, hear me out; in this chair model i would like to replace the original wood material by paint, but to mimic the paint effect, i wish to apply a bump map of the underlying wood carving texture on the paint, so that it looks like the paint has been brushed in all the nooks and crannies of the original woodwork.
