I have a gymnasium that is lit by 50 metal-halite lights - does anyone have any tips for lighting such large spaces - I think adding one light per fixture is overkill - please help

Do it... and make them IES lights too while you are at it. Lithonia has great statium IES lights. Come on, I dare you! I would look awesome.
I dunno, maybe stick lights in the fixtures that are closest to walls, so you can see their effect, and then just approximate lighting for the rest. Like an area light for every group of four or something.
