focus distance linkable?

I am wondering if someone knows a trick to link the focus distance of a camera to a distance between the camera and a dummy object.

One obvious way is to check the use camera target option, and then you can controll the camera target distance several ways. If you have max8, the easiest way is to use the expose transform helper and wire the distance parameter to a either the camera target, or the focus distance controller for the renderer - camera rollout in the track view. For max7 or earlier, you could use a script, or expression controller, but for those I have no clue as for how to set them up
