  • Image upload and exterior window help

Hello everyone. I am sorta new here - been "lurking" in the forum for about a year now. Too intimidated to post just yet. But I really need some help on my windows for an exterior shot. Hoever, I cant figure out how to post the image - if anyone can tell me how, I will gladly post it.

    I've found this thread:
    http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpB...ighlight=glass

Thats what I am using now. But, the model is just a shell and I don't want the windows to be so transparent, rather relfect a bit map of a sky or even an HDRI map (I still don't really understand those yet.. but I am reading.. and reading.. still reading.) Any help would be great.

Thanks Natty for getting me access to this awesome, vast rabbit hole of information!

Ok, replying to my own message - found out how to upload images - need suggestions on what web service you all use to sign up and start uploading. Thanks.

Without seeing an image to evaluate I'm not sure what problems you're having, but I can share with you the glass settings I've found work best.

For clear window glass with a slightly blue/green tint I use the following settings:

Damn websense is blocking me from posting my cap on imageshack. I'll have to describe it...

Okay, in a Vray material, set Diffuse color to a dark blue-green, like 23,77,73

Then set Reflect color to pure white and enable Fresnel reflections. Uncheck the little "L" next to it and change the Fresnel IOR to 2.0 or a bit higher for nice reflections.

Copy the Diffuse color swatch into the Refraction color. Then adjust the whiteness slider to make it a very light blue-green like 225,232,231

Be sure and check Affect shadows so light will pass through your glass properly, especially if using standard lights.

I normally leave the fog settings at default for architectural glass. I only use colored fog for for glass objects such as vases or whatever.

      Hope this helps. Cheers

Clifton - thanks for the great advice. I will play with those setting soon. For now, I just put a "raytrace" reflection in the window setting (standard) and then turned it into a VrayMaterial Wrapper. I sorta got the look I was going for.

DaForce - I will check that out and upload images tonight!

Thanks again! Look for the images in the image upload section!

Dont use the standard max raytrace shader... no matter what.
It causes render problems... like splotches... etc

            Just use a vraymaterial
