Thanks digtlpete! They really do look identical. Would it be possible to post your Combustions file to remove any possible ambiguities and put my Render Elements anxiety finally to rest?

Basic Comping of a Vray render

Included in the .rar is the max file, the combustion file, and the rendered footage elements. The only thing that is missing from this example is the use of refraction. Use the same technique as you would with reflections. I believe I also included a max 8.0 1.47 version as well. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am currently working on a tutorial that will cover everything.
I hope this helps to solve your problems with render elements.

Maybe later I will do some other tips... tweaking shadows, using mattes, doing reflection in comp with the bend normal pass... hmmm... maybe another DVD. Wink
I still having great trouble getting a sound workflow for rendering animations!

i'm having a problem that i cant render out all the render elements to rpf's with out running out of ram. as we render alot at 4960x4960. Does anyone know a way in which I can get all elements as rpfs for combustion work easier ?
I know you can use vrimg file, which writes straight to disk instead of ram, but then i'd have a load of exr's and i like how the rpf's have the extra channel data. Is there anyway to do this ?
ps, hows that tutorial coming along ?

There are several methods for reducing memory consumption, you should do a search. One thing you may try if you are running out of memory is turn off "render to memory frame buffer" in the VRay Frame buffer roll out. Haven't had alot of spare time lately to devote to the combustion tutorial, hopefully I will have something soon.
One other thing is that Combustion is painfully slow when dealing with high res images, just a little warning.

Has anyone actually succeded comping in Combustion yet, doesn't seem to be? I've tried .exr's but just get the blown out effect when adding the two rawshadow and rawgi together like others have said. Also tried .rpf but got the same results which is annoying plus .rpf doesnt seem to like my refraction channel at all. I've played around with gamma for days in each app and had very little success.
