Being an architectural visualizer I don't normally have close-ups of automobiles so I don't know if there are any tricks for making a vray material automotive paint...

I tried making a material like an opaque glass, i.e. the diffuse color is set at the desired car color, and the reflect color is white with Fresnel checked, and with a Fresnel IOR at 2 or 3.

It looks okay, but it doesn't have the reflective "depth" that you would expect in automotive paint. Is there a better way? Maybe a shellac material?

    Thanks in advance. Cheers.

Some of the best car threads are on this forum. Look for author "suurland".

Just download the EGZ Vray materials at vray.info. The carpaint material is great.

@chicoone: I really like your second link, thanks. I think I could make a vray equivalent with Shellac with 2 different reflective vray materials.

@timmatron: yes, I forgot about those. I download his latest updates every year or so, but never seem to use them. I will check it out.
