  • Can rendering unclamped float exr only be done in vrimg2exr?

Hi been trawling through the forum but this seemed to confuse me even more so decided to just ask.

I want to use the EXR format for a comp I'm working on, the footage needs to be unclamped and the only way I have been able to do this is by first saving a stream of .vrimg images and using the Vrimg2Exr converter. unfortunately as this generates huge files I wondered if there was a way of saving open exr straight out of max with values greater than 1.0?

    Thanks

    Sany

Rendering to exr straight from max 8 and unticking clamp output in gbuffer section works.

Thanks for the reply Panthon, However that's exactly what I've been doing but in all cases the image is clamped.

Just to recap? on your system if you render out a VRay light with a 30 mult, uncheck clamped in gbuffer and render out as an exr you get areas of the image brighter than 1.0?

The only way I can achieve the 30.0 brightness is to either render out to the VRay FB. And if I want to save it to a EXR, the only way I have found to do this is to save out as an vrimg from Vray and then convert them to EXR.

With the 1.47.03 build, you will need to generate an Unclamped color channel and for EXR export make sure you select the option to use that channel.

For later versions, you can use the standard method too.

        Best regards,

Thanks for speedy reply once again Vlado, works a treat!

However your comment about later versions stumped me does that mean versions already available or future releases? If it relates to future releases I'll spare you the when will it be available comments

          Thank you both.

I dont use exr anymore, i use rpf instead, and yes, i get values beyond 1.0 which i correct in combustion using gamma, gain and pedestal controls.
I get an overexposed image, and i can correct it to my hearts content, letting it underexposed if I want to. The thing is, i have never ticked the unclamped color thingy and it still works.
