We always render everything to 720X576 25 frames progressive (not fields), from that u can play it on a dvd or in a computer screen.
Computers video cards let u reach resolutions far beyond HD, but rendering in true hd means 1920X1080 25p! Can you afford that?
You can render it bigger and then downconvert to create the PAL version...We don't do that, because it's a lot of rendertime and most of the clients use our work on LCD flat TVs.
Next thing: Most of the new TV are HD capable...but HD players are not in the market...(well they are, but they are rare and overpriced, not likely in your client's office). Granted, next year we will be asked to double our render resolution, because 720X576 footage looks like crap on a HD tv, but not now.
Last thing: 16X9. You can render to 720X576 anamorphic straight from max. Here you can see my settings in max:
This way your render will play on a DVD as 16:9 (like a movie) on a 16:9 tv and as letterbox (black bars on top and bottom of the image) on a conventional 4:3 TV.My Youtube VFX Channel - http://www.youtube.com/panthon
