  • sandwave (patterns)?

    hi friends
    anyone some ideas how to make sandwaves like this?
    for using as displacement?
    i've tried with ps,but my results are bad

    I did something kind of similar I guess, but it was for a wall pattern. You need to use the pen tool & paths in Photoshop so you can make the curves nice & smooth. Here is the displacement map I made and what a render of it looks like.

      I opened your ref. image in crazybump and it did a pretty good job of it.

      This is with default settings, I just clicked 'analise for the 3d shapes' and then rendered the displacement map from it.
      Make that image tile and and use displacement with the normal for best results.

          It basically works similar to how you create spines in Max. Using the pen tool, you select points and create lines and curves with it. Then you can adjust those points with bezier handles. When you get a shape you are happy with, you can stroke a brush along the path to create the actual layer that you can then start as a base for your displacement map.
