  • SSS / Convert mr to Vray

I have been trying to create a wax candle. I am not sure how to turn on SSS or even if it is necessary with Fast SSS. The wax just does not become transparent in the areas surrounding the flame.
    My questions are:
    1) Best settings for a wax candle
    2) Best method for illuminating flame. I used a VrayLight map
    3) Is there a mental ray to Vray material converter.

    Thank you,
    Timothy

You will probably need to increase the radius for the deep/shallow scattering and optionally turn on the back-scattering (by increasing the depth).

Currently there is no coverter from mental ray fast SSS to V-Ray, although there may be one available in the next build.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

Thank you Vlado. I still am unable to get the results I am looking for. Do you have any links to tutorials for SSS that you could post?

      Thank you

Nope, but if you can post a simplified version of your scene, I can try to make a quick set up for you.

          Vlado. here's the candle

Vlado, thank you for taking a look at this. I seem to get different results w an SSS material. :
          1) There is some "extra" geometry that the SSS material picks up over the standard Vray material.
          2) Having problems seeing through the candle wax w the SSS.
I've included renders of the different scenarios as well as the file. Any help getting the SSS material to behave like wax would truly be appreciated. (I'm working on a rendering of a wine cellar that I wouild like to light by candle light.
          Thank you,
          Timothy
